Artist Statement
Written in Sand
What makes up the substance of a location? It’s the land. In this case, “sand”. Mount Baldy, located in Michigan City, Indiana, is a “living” sand dune located at the eastern end of Indiana Dunes National Park. Over the past 3 years I have had the opportunity to visit Mount Baldy every 2-3 weeks from September to May. During this time, I have been able to witness the seasonal changes and patterns to the dune and surrounding landscape. In this series, clay and
3-D materials are carefully crafted to mirror aspects of the dune and surrounding space at different points throughout the year. Each painting contains an element of sand from the Dune’s shore, not only to resemble the likeness of the landscape through color and texture, but to truly embody the substance and emotion of the dune in its season. The clay used in the vessels is sourced from the ground, much like the dune sand I am embedding it with. In this way, the works act as a time capsule, forever encasing a piece of the dune and capturing it at a specific moment in time. My hope for the viewer is that they are able to see my work and feel like they are standing in a piece of the story.
