rejuvenation
by carissa bombardiere
This body of work investigates the use of abandoned items and gives them life. Working with deceased natural specimens, vintage found objects, and waste, I repurpose them in a rejuvenating manner. This process challenges me to creatively restore energy and beauty to discarded items. These repurposed objects are arranged organically to tell a story which explores the theme of rejuvenation.
The vessel through which these objects come to life is cyanotype printing. Cyanotype is a chemical process that develops a photographic blueprint when exposed to UV rays. This process is integral to the body of work conceptually because the results are varied, making the prints unpredictable, experimental, and spontaneous. In keeping with the idea of giving life to what would be discarded or forgotten, I accept the errors in the prints, and explore new avenues through mixed-media alterations. The prints bring energy and movement to what was once a still, forgotten item.
This body of work changes the perspective of waste and the discarded as something to inspire innovative thinking and new purpose. I encourage the audience to pause on the things overlooked. How can you use the resources around you in a new way that brings life and energy to an otherwise abandoned object?
