Artist Statement
This work explores the style of pop art and the culture that emerged during its era, with the use of anime characters. The characters are either original or come from their own source material. Inspiration from these works derive from Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Also, fine art pieces from the past are redrawn with the use of playful
techniques and innovation. Objects that were popular during the pop art era are redrawn with pop culture characters of this time. Celebrities displayed in Warhol’s or Lichtenstein’s works are also drawn in the style of pop art as anime characters. Some
artworks are their own source material, as they simply just utilize the pop art style.
All artworks incorporate the use of halftones, small dots that spread across the canvas. They can be used as shadows, lighting, or even texture. Shadows are pure black, the outlines are very thick and the “noise” effect is added to the canvas to give it a feeling as if the viewer is looking at a comic book.
The reason why the anime style is utilized is to give Japanese art form representation, as it should be more appreciated in the West. The goal of these images is to be used as catalysts to teach others about fine art and celebrate the playfulness of
the art across time.
